Gemotions

The coffee cup trembled slightly in his hand as he walked the new recruit, Ben, through the warehouse. Each step felt heavy. He could feel the weight of every task, every responsibility, he had been carrying for the past five years. It was being handed over, piece by piece, to this… this stranger.

"Okay, so this is where we store the… the widgets," John mumbled, trying to sound as if he was in control. He pointed towards a towering shelf, the movement of his arm stiff and unnatural. He felt a sudden pressure behind his eyes, a sensation like the very foundations of his work life were about to shift.

Ben kept peppering him with questions, his voice bright and optimistic. John, in response, found himself moving quicker, trying to hurry through the tasks, as if by finishing them sooner, he could somehow change the fact that they were being transferred to someone else.
