"Indefinite delay," the woman at the desk had said. Liam’s flight to see his father was delayed because of weather. The news hit him like a physical blow, leaving him winded. He felt as though a steel band was tightening around his chest.

His phone buzzed. A text. Another one. Each message a small stab of dread. He couldn't imagine facing the news he might receive, or the regret that might linger.

He retreated to a quiet corner, trying to regulate his breathing. The harsh fluorescent lights of the terminal seemed to mock him. He closed his eyes, clenching his jaw to try and stop the tremble that had begun.

He opened his eyes. He got up and moved toward the window, looking out at the dreary day. Every gust of wind, every driving rain drop, felt like a deliberate act of cruelty.
