The airport's impersonal atmosphere amplified the sense of unease that had already begun to build inside David. His flight to see his sister in the hospital, delayed, the words echoed in his head. Every cough or sniffle seemed to amplify the internal pressure.

He stood by the window, watching the rain pour down the glass, blurring the world outside. His sister's face, pale and weak, flashed before his eyes. He’d promised he would be there.

He ran a hand through his hair, leaving it disheveled. His breath came in shallow, uneven gasps. He found he could hardly look at the other people in the terminal.

He felt the prickle of tears, which he fought back, clenching his jaw so hard that his teeth ached. He didn't want to show weakness.
