The band started playing, and the dance floor filled. He was making his way toward her. She felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to flee. A cold dread seeped into her bones.

Her legs felt like lead. She excused herself, muttering something about needing air. She escaped to the patio, the cool night air a welcome relief.
