Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the storm brewing inside her. He'd been gone for nearly an hour, supposedly "picking up milk" at the grocery store. His phone, left carelessly on the coffee table, buzzed with an incoming call. Hesitantly, she picked it up, her fingers trembling. She didn't mean to, not really. The caller ID displayed a name she didn't recognize. Her breath hitched. She imagined her chest tightening, a heavy weight pressing down. She quickly put the phone down, her heart pounding in her ears, then instantly retrieved it again to check the caller ID.
