The principal’s words, "Mrs. Olsen will be your son's second-grade teacher," echoed in Alan’s ears. He felt a wave of nausea wash over him. His childhood flooded back – the strict rules, the sharp reprimands, the constant feeling of being watched.

He abruptly excused himself, muttering something about needing air. He stumbled outside, leaning against the brick wall of the school, the cool surface doing little to soothe the heat that surged through his body. His hands trembled as he lit a cigarette, something he hadn't done in years.

He closed his eyes. He saw the face of the boy he used to be, shrinking under Mrs. Olsen's gaze. He felt a desperate need to protect his son from the same experience. He wanted to intervene. He did not know how.
