Chef Marco read the review again, each phrase a hammer blow to his already fragile ego. His cheeks burned, a heat radiating from his core. He hadn't felt this exposed in years. The critic, with their razor-sharp pen, had sliced through his carefully constructed reputation.

He paced the kitchen, his steps erratic, his breath coming in shallow gasps. The knives, usually extensions of his artistry, seemed to glint menacingly in the dim light. He pictured the critic's face, a smug mask of disdain, and felt a wave of nausea rise in his throat. He had to escape.

He found himself grabbing his coat, his hands trembling as he fumbled with the buttons. He felt the urge to run, to disappear into the anonymity of the city streets. He hesitated, his feet planted firmly on the floor. It was a choice, this moment, and a choice he wasn't sure he could make.
