The card was brightly coloured, but its cheerful message felt hollow. It was unsigned, generic. A wave of unease washed over her. She felt watched, exposed. She quickly gathered the rest of the mail.

She hurried back to the safety of her apartment, her legs felt heavy. She slammed the door shut and engaged the deadbolt, the sound echoing in the sudden quiet. She leaned against the door, her breath coming in shallow gasps.

She immediately went through the house, checking every window, every door. She turned on all the lights, banishing the shadows. Her phone felt like a lifeline. She picked it up and quickly called her partner. The dial tone felt like an eternity.
