His fingers fumbled with the key, unable to insert it into the lock. He was late for a scheduled dinner. The woman, Emily, had sent him a photograph of a bracelet. He’d given that exact bracelet to his date, just last week.

As he finally pushed the door open, he heard movement inside. The sound made him jump. His pulse quickened. The smell of his own dinner cooking filled the air, a cruel parody of normalcy.

He felt pinned. Every step felt measured and heavy. He was certain to be caught. The desire to turn and run was strong, but he knew he was trapped in this situation. He took one step inside, his stomach twisting.
