The dim, dusty attic felt oppressive, the air heavy with the scent of forgotten things. Clara ran her hand over her throat, a nervous habit. A copy of "Gourmet Gazette" lay open on a rickety table, its glossy pages taunting her. “Madame Evangeline’s Secret Spice Blend: The Taste of the Orient!”

Clara's jaw clenched. The very blend she'd spent years perfecting, her most prized creation, was now touted as a Parisian culinary marvel. Her hands, when she brushed her hair back, felt clammy.

She avoided looking at the beautiful picture on the page, wanting to look away. All the years she had spent in the tiny spice shop, testing and re-testing different combinations, were now for naught. She sank onto a dusty old trunk, the weight of the betrayal making her shoulders slump forward.
