A chill snaked up Clara’s spine as she observed Ben, her roommate, laughing at something on his phone. The journal, hidden beneath her mattress, felt suddenly exposed. She had to know, and the idea of asking made her skin prickle. She’d found the top corner bent back, a tiny, almost imperceptible detail only she would have noticed. Now, the space in the room felt smaller, the walls closing in. She kept her voice flat, trying to sound normal as she spoke to him, but she wanted to bolt.
