The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the living room as Daniel stared at the box. He’d just moved into this apartment. He knew nothing about the previous tenant. He knew nothing about why this package had arrived.

He picked up the box, his fingers finding purchase on the thick, rough cardboard. He tested its weight, its dimensions. It was light. It felt wrong. He looked at the door. He was going to turn around and leave.

He considered going out to the store. He needed something, anything. Then he noticed the faint scent of something unpleasant emanating from the box. He couldn't go anywhere.
