The team meeting was being held in the gym's storage closet. The air was stale, the space cramped. Maya kept her arms wrapped tightly around herself, as if trying to physically contain the turmoil swirling within her. The fluorescent lights flickered erratically, casting long, dancing shadows that seemed to mock her.

Coach Davis’s face was unreadable. She spoke in a low, somber tone. Maya's eyes darted around, trying to find an escape. She felt a burning sensation behind her eyes.

Her name was the last one on the list. When the coach's words finally came, they sliced through the room. She blinked rapidly, her vision blurring.
