As soon as the puppy, a golden retriever with boundless energy, had bounded into the apartment, Liam felt a profound sense of foreboding. He stared at the animal, its wagging tail a source of discomfort. He started to unconsciously pull at the collar of his shirt.

The thought of training, walking, feeding, and cleaning up after a puppy terrified him. He pictured the chewed shoes, the scratched furniture, the constant demands on his time and energy. His mind raced, calculating the potential disruption to his life.
