The bell above the door of the pawn shop gave a jarring ring, shattering the momentary stillness. She could feel her pulse racing, a frantic drumbeat against her ribs. She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself.

The ring, its gold band catching the light, seemed to pulse with a malevolent energy. Her hands began to shake uncontrollably. She had to get out, she just *had* to.
