He stared at the screen, the message glowing like a malevolent eye. He'd meant to text his wife about picking up groceries. Instead, a hurried message had flown to his ex-girlfriend, detailing his current location. His stomach twisted into a tight knot. He scrubbed a hand over his face.

The house around him seemed to shrink, the familiar furniture taking on an ominous cast. Every creak of the floorboards, every rustle of leaves outside his window, amplified in the sudden stillness. He wished he could rewind time.
