The text pulsed on the screen, a malevolent reminder of his mistake. He'd wanted to make a lighthearted suggestion to a colleague. Instead, the message had been sent to his ex-wife, the one person he desperately tried to avoid. He felt a chill spread through him.

He was suddenly aware of the silence of the apartment, the muffled sounds of the street outside. He ran a hand through his hair, his fingers tangling. He felt pinned down, paralyzed.
