The meeting invitation landed with a thud in David's inbox. A summons to the VP's office. His breath hitched in his chest. He clicked on the calendar entry, his pulse quickening with each passing second.

He looked at his reflection in the darkened computer screen. His face, usually ruddy, was pale. He felt a tremor in his hands as he ran his fingers through his hair, fluffing it. The chair creaked as he leaned back.

He’d spent weeks preparing, rehearsing his pitch. But now, all the effort felt insignificant, fragile. He thought of the other candidate, Maria, her sharp intellect and undeniable charm. He could almost feel the floor giving way beneath him.
