The fluorescent lights of the office seemed to flicker with an erratic rhythm. Jennifer felt her vision blur. She’d been staring at the computer screen for hours, but the words swam before her eyes.

She pushed back from her desk, the chair screeching on the linoleum. She walked to the window, gazing out at the city. The other candidate, Michael, was known for his ruthlessness.

A sudden, sharp pain lanced through her head. She closed her eyes, trying to focus. She had to stay calm. She had to present herself well, in a way that showcased strength, but the thought of failing made her muscles tense.
