He slammed his laptop shut, the sound echoing in his small bedroom. The rejection email burned in his mind. He sprang up from his desk and started to pace, the small space quickly becoming a cage.

His breath came in short, shallow gasps. The walls pressed in on him, seeming to shrink with every step. The thought of facing the world, of explaining this failure, filled him with a cold dread.

He grabbed his keys and jacket, needing to get out, to escape the suffocating atmosphere. The familiar click of the door lock offered no comfort. The street, usually a source of energy, felt menacing in the fading light.
