“No, no, no,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. The neatly printed words on the notice were a cruel joke. The apartment, her sanctuary, her safe place, was about to be snatched away.

Her breath came in ragged gasps. She clutched at her chest, as if trying to physically contain the panic rising within her. The walls of her apartment seemed to shrink, closing in on her.

She backed away from the table, bumping into a chair. The sudden movement sent a sharp pain through her knee, but she barely noticed it. The only thing she could focus on was the impending loss.

She buried her face in her hands, her body shaking uncontrollably.
