The discovery sent a shiver down Emily’s spine. The attic was dim, lit only by a single bare bulb. She had expected to find trinkets, not this. Her palms began to sweat, the paper feeling slick in her grip. Her breath caught in her throat.

She backed away from the trunk, her eyes scanning the room, as if anticipating a sudden movement. The old wooden beams overhead seemed to loom, casting ominous shadows. The air felt thin and difficult to breathe.

She gripped the letter with a vise-like grip, not wanting to put it down. She felt a desperate urge to get out of the confined space. Emily sprinted down the stairs, the revelation's weight heavy on her.
