The basement was cold and damp, a stark contrast to the comfortable warmth of the house above. David stared at the letter, the paper feeling rough and unfamiliar. He found himself starting at the dark corners of the room. The dim light flickered, casting shadows that seemed to writhe and shift.

He ran a hand over his face, his skin prickling with goosebumps. He took a few steps away from the boxes, the letter still clutched in his hand. His chest constricted, making it difficult to breathe. The air felt thick, heavy with unspoken things.

He wanted to scream, to lash out. Instead, he forced himself to take a deep breath, and he retreated from the basement, closing the door behind him.
