The detective’s casual explanation, delivered with a detached professionalism, had sent shivers down her spine. The basement, he’d said, was where they found… it. She had to remind herself to breathe, the air suddenly thick.

She found herself avoiding the basement altogether. When she had to retrieve something from the storage room, she raced down the steps, grabbed the item, and scrambled back up, her pulse quickening with each second.

The silence of the house became oppressive. She began leaving lights on, even during the day. The shadows seemed to dance, to coalesce into dark shapes.
