The email sat in her inbox, a digital serpent coiled and ready to strike. Sarah hadn't opened it, but she knew what was inside. The subject line was like a brand on her conscience. Identical Project Proposals. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. She took a deep breath.

She walked towards the building. Every creak and groan of the old wooden floors amplified the feeling in her chest. She found herself outside her competitor’s office and knew the moment she walked inside, her career would either be made or broken. Or both. The door was unlocked.

Her mouth was as dry as parchment. She reached out and knocked and waited for the door to open, and for the confrontation to begin.
