The silence of the library pressed down on him, suffocating him. David stared at the printout of his project, the ink blurring before his eyes. It was a disaster. All of it. He needed a distraction. He reached for his phone, scrolling through his contacts, and stopped at hers. He couldn’t. He didn't want to break down.

He slammed his fist on the table, startling the few patrons. A young woman looked over at him with a frown. He immediately apologized and attempted to continue his work but kept staring at the paper. It was his. All his hard work. Now, it was just… something else. A knot had formed in his throat, and it was hard to swallow.

He buried his face in his hands, wishing he could disappear. He wouldn't be able to speak. He would have to leave, but he couldn’t face the consequences. His own personal failure.
