The gleam of the security system’s lights, installed overnight, burned into David’s vision. He’d known, of course. The hints had been there. The expensive cars, the frequent trips. But seeing the system, the blatant display of wealth, felt like a declaration of war.

His apartment, once a haven, now felt confining. He spent hours staring at the new equipment, a grimace etched on his face. He felt like an intruder in his own life. The click of the door to his apartment building triggered an involuntary jump.

He began leaving the blinds drawn, preferring the darkness. His life felt suddenly and irrevocably changed. A low groan escaped his lips, a release of the tension that had settled deep within him.
