The text from her roommate was blunt: "Did you see the email?" Olivia’s chest tightened, a vise clamping down. She scrolled through her phone, her thumb moving with glacial slowness. When she saw the words, her breath caught.

Her vision blurred. The cheerful chatter of the coffee shop faded into background noise. She felt a sudden urge to flee, to run away from this reality. She quickly took a large sip of water, her throat suddenly dry, and her hands began to tremble as she set the glass back down.
