The notice, a stark white rectangle, trembled in her hand. Her breath hitched, catching in her chest. She reread the words: “Conversion to Condominium Ownership.” The lobby, usually bustling with neighbors, now felt oppressive, the air thick with unspoken anxieties.

Her fingers traced the crack in the peeling paint on the hallway wall. She felt a chill creep over her skin, even though the apartment was stuffy. The familiar squeak of the elevator seemed to amplify the silence. She quickly stuffed the notice in her bag, avoiding eye contact with the building’s superintendent.
