Gemotions

The news felt like a punch to the gut. The building, their sanctuary, was going condo. He found himself walking around the apartment, touching things, as if to reassure himself they were real. He kept sighing.

He poured a glass of water, his hand shaking so much that he spilled some. The water stained the counter, a small, ugly imperfection. He sat at the kitchen table, staring blankly ahead. His eyes burned, but no tears fell.

He replayed conversations in his head, desperate for solutions, for any glimmer of hope. The future was a vast, unknowable expanse. The thought choked him.
