The coffee cup trembled in Marcus's hands, the dark liquid threatening to spill. He had just seen it. His application essay. Presented on the college's website for all to see. He felt a creeping coldness spread through him, freezing his limbs.

He wanted to scream at the absurdity of it all. At the audacity. At his own past self, who had so willingly laid bare his struggles for admission. He pictured the campus, the halls, the people, all reading his private thoughts. He winced, a wave of revulsion washing over him.

Marcus set the cup down with a thud, the ceramic cracking slightly. He was suddenly overwhelmed by the need to flee, to escape the suffocating feeling of being watched. He rose from his chair, his movements jerky and hurried, and started pacing, unable to calm the turmoil.
