The air grew thin, making James struggle to breathe. He stared, transfixed, at the ring. His grandfather’s ring, his grandmother’s, lost after she went to the hospital. How did it end up here? The shop seemed to shrink around him, the walls closing in.

“That’s a classic,” the shop owner said, breaking the silence. James jumped, startled. He felt a sudden chill, a sense of foreboding.

"I… I need to see it," he said, his voice strained and tight. The shopkeeper’s eyes narrowed, studying him. James felt a tremor run through him, a feeling of unease that threatened to overwhelm him.
