The silence in the car was crushing. David hadn't spoken since he’d told his parents he was moving back in. His grip tightened on the steering wheel as he turned into the cul-de-sac.

His dad, in the passenger seat, cleared his throat. "Well, David, we're glad to have you back." The words, though seemingly meant well, left a sour taste in his mouth. David avoided his gaze.

He took a deep breath, trying to steady his trembling hands. The house loomed before him, casting a long shadow. He felt a desperate urge to reverse the car and drive away, anywhere but here. The thought of being dependent on them again made his stomach churn.
