A bead of sweat trickled down Maya's temple as Mr. Henderson introduced Bethany, her replacement, to the software system. Her stomach churned. This was it. The inevitable conclusion. Each click of the mouse by Bethany felt like a nail in the coffin of her career at the firm. She forced a smile, but it felt brittle, like thin ice. Maya’s hands trembled as she pointed out the nuances of data entry. She found herself talking faster, almost as if she could speed up the process and somehow retain her position. The fluorescent lights of the office seemed to buzz with a new, unwelcome intensity.

She imagined her desk, her meticulously organized files, the small succulent she'd been nurturing for months – all being replaced by Bethany's touch. Her chest felt constricted, as if a vise were tightening around her ribcage. The simple act of explaining the coding shortcuts felt suffocating.
