The sun shone brightly, mocking the somber mood that enveloped Kevin. He was told to train Daniel, a fresh-faced graduate. He watched as Daniel took notes, a blank canvas ready to absorb all the knowledge. Kevin felt it constrict his throat.

He knew that Daniel's arrival had changed things. The promotion Kevin had been subtly hinting at was gone. Every instruction he gave felt like a relinquishing, a slow and agonizing surrender of his role.
