Gemotions

Maya stared at the notice posted on the university bulletin board. Her breath hitched in her throat. Her name, bold and stark, among others accused of academic dishonesty. A wave of heat flushed her cheeks, and she felt a tremor run through her body. The world seemed to tilt slightly. She backed away from the board, bumping into someone in the crowded hallway.

She clutched her backpack tighter, her knuckles white. The accusations swirled in her mind, a chaotic mess of words and implications. She felt a desperate need to escape, to disappear. She ducked into the nearest restroom, seeking a moment of privacy. Her reflection in the mirror was a stranger, eyes wide with a fear she didn’t know she possessed.

She splashed cold water on her face, but the icy liquid did little to quell the internal turmoil. The weight of the situation settled upon her shoulders, a heavy cloak she couldn't shed. She leaned against the cool tile wall, the smooth surface a stark contrast to the churning chaos within. The thought of facing her professor, of explaining herself, filled her with dread.
