Gemotions

The DJ announced the next song, a slow dance. *Oh, God,* I thought. I scanned the room, searching for a place to hide. My pulse quickened as I saw him move through the crowd. He was making his way toward me, that familiar, charming smile in place.

I instinctively reached for my champagne flute, taking a large gulp of the bubbly liquid. It felt like my throat constricted as the bubbles tickled on the way down. I plastered on a smile, hoping it looked natural.

“Well, this is unexpected,” I heard him say, his voice as smooth as ever. My response caught in my throat. I couldn’t form a sentence.
