Gemotions

The first dance began. I had been enjoying the evening, feeling relaxed, until I spotted him. My meticulously crafted composure began to unravel. The floor beneath me seemed to shift. I gripped the edge of the table, my knuckles turning white.

I tried to focus on the happy couple, but my eyes kept straying back to his location. He was watching me. Or at least, I thought he was. It was difficult to tell from across the room.

My head began to throb, a dull ache behind my eyes. I felt a desperate urge to flee, to escape the suffocating familiarity of this shared space. I made a sudden decision and began to back away slowly, towards the exit.
