The best man was giving a speech, filled with heartfelt anecdotes and embarrassing childhood stories. I was smiling and nodding along, trying to appear engaged, when I saw him. He was seated at a table across the room.

My carefully constructed facade threatened to crumble. A knot formed in my stomach. The humor in the speech faded, replaced by a sense of impending doom. I quickly filled my champagne glass, downing the contents in one go.

I felt a wave of dizziness wash over me, making me sway. I put my hand to my head and leaned to the side.
