He stared at the email, the words blurring before his eyes. It was a simple mistake, they said, but to Richard, it felt like a monumental betrayal. His stomach lurched, and he tasted bile in his throat. He felt disconnected, like he was watching himself from outside his own body.

He leaned back in his chair, feeling the blood drain from his face. His carefully constructed life, his routines, his sense of control, all seemed to teeter on the brink of collapse. His hands curled into tight fists.

He wanted to scream, to lash out, to do anything to make this feeling of dread disappear. He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself, but his heart still raced.
