The phone vibrated in his pocket. A text message, short and to the point. “Party is off.” He closed his eyes. He’d envisioned the perfect celebration, a culmination of all his hard work and dedication. Now, all that remained was the hollow echo of his unfulfilled anticipation.

He opened his eyes, feeling a strange detachment from his surroundings. The festive lights, now casting an eerie glow on the empty room, seemed to mock him. His hands fumbled as he ran them through his hair, a gesture of helplessness. He knew this feeling, the hollowness, the sting of dashed hopes.
