Gemotions

Michael found the card sticking out of his overflowing mailbox. A brightly colored balloon adorned the front. He almost threw it away, thinking it was junk mail. Something compelled him to open it. It was a generic "Wishing you a happy day!" with no signature. A wave of unease washed over him. He felt suddenly exposed.

He backed away from his mailbox, his gaze shifting to the dense trees bordering his property. A slight tremor ran through him. He imagined someone watching him, having known his birthday. He tried to recall anyone who might have sent it anonymously. No one came to mind.

He went inside and placed the card on the kitchen counter, refusing to touch it again. He busied himself with mundane tasks, trying to regain his composure. He found himself constantly glancing at the card, as if it possessed a malign presence. It was a simple card, yet it left him with an unsettled sensation.
