The old house felt even colder than she remembered. Eleanor wrapped her arms around herself, trying to ward off the chill that seemed to seep into her bones. Her brother, Charles, wandered around the hallway, humming to himself. She didn’t know how he could be so calm.

She hated the shadows, the way they danced and flickered in her peripheral vision. The air hung heavy, thick with the scent of damp wood and something else…something she couldn't quite place. Something unsettling.

She called out to Charles, but the words felt trapped in her throat. She needed to leave. Now.
