The fluorescent lights of the laundromat buzzed, amplifying the sudden stillness in Leo’s ears. He stared at the wallet. The texture of the leather felt alien and heavy in his grasp. Thick bundles of cash peeked from the opening. He swallowed, the movement rough in his dry throat. This was unbelievable.

He glanced around, suddenly acutely aware of every creak of the machines, every cough and sigh of the other patrons. Their faces seemed to shift, taking on a suspicious cast. He felt a nervous sweat begin to bloom on his forehead.

He imagined the owner returning, angry, accusing. The image caused a jolt of panic to surge through him. He quickly shoved the wallet into the pocket of his jeans. He had to think. He had to be smart. He gripped the edge of the washing machine, needing something to steady himself.
