"Oh, Jesus," whispered Chloe, her voice barely a breath. The wallet felt hot, burning in her hands. The crisp bills inside were a stark contrast to the grime of the street. Everything in her field of vision seemed to tilt.

Her gaze swung wildly from side to side. The noise of the city, the horns, the distant sirens, all seemed amplified, creating a cacophony that grated on her nerves. She felt a wave of nausea, a cold dread creeping through her veins.

She imagined the owner coming back, searching, panicked. The thought caused her to flinch. She shoved the wallet deep into her purse, her fingers fumbling with the clasp. She took a deep breath, fighting to regain some semblance of control.
