“What the…” stammered Emily, her voice thin. The wallet lay open on the park bench. Money cascaded from its depths, reflecting the evening sunlight. Her hands trembled as she gathered the scattered bills.

Her mind raced. She imagined headlines, police reports, all pointing back to her. A shiver ran through her, despite the warmth of the day. A wave of dizziness washed over her.

She looked around, her eyes flitting from person to person. Their faces seemed to blur, taking on an ominous quality. She scrambled to collect the cash, her movements frantic. She needed to disappear.
