He’d received the letter a week ago, but seeing the For Sale sign planted in the front yard was a different kind of shock. John felt a dizzying sensation, like the world was tilting. He stood frozen, his eyes darting across the familiar façade.

He tried to swallow, but his throat felt constricted. He’d imagined so many scenarios, but none of them involved the gut-wrenching feeling that consumed him now.

He took a shaky step towards the house, then another, as if trying to memorize every detail before it vanished. The thought of losing this place, this piece of himself, threatened to unravel him.
