The air tasted metallic to Emily. The demolition crew had already arrived, their trucks parked in the driveway. She watched them from across the street, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs.

She remembered the swing set in the backyard, the scent of freshly cut grass, the way the sunlight streamed through the kitchen window in the mornings. Everything about that house was imprinted on her soul.
