The email notification popped up, displaying the subject line: “RSVP for Mark’s Birthday Bash!” It was scheduled for the same day as Emily’s much-anticipated pottery painting class. Emily felt a chill snake down her spine. All her planning, all her excitement, threatened to unravel.

She dropped her phone onto the sofa, the screen facing up. Her heart began to race. She visualized the scenario: her friends, torn between her event and Mark’s. She could feel a bead of sweat trickle down her temple.

She chewed on her lip, a nervous habit she thought she had outgrown. Without a word, Emily quickly grabbed her keys. She had to do something, anything, to fix this.
