He saw the familiar script of her handwriting on the book cover. He sat down across from her at the library. He steeled himself. “Sarah?” he asked, his voice wavering slightly. “It’s… Peter. We were best friends in high school.”

She looked up from the book, and something in his chest constricted. She had a confused, yet polite, expression. "I'm sorry," she said, her voice soft, "I don't think I know you." His body temperature plummeted.

He felt a terrifying feeling of emptiness, as if a vital part of him had been ripped away. The library, once a haven of shared secrets, felt cold and sterile. He rose abruptly, his legs wobbly, and stumbled out into the sunshine, the world a confusing, disorienting blur.
